Description:
Abstract:
This map represents the general distribution of bedrock and surficial deposits of the Fort Klamath 7.5' quadrangle, Klamath County, Oregon, at a scale of 1:24,000. The Fort Klamath quadrangle straddles a low divide between the Wood River on the west and the Williamson River on the east. Located about 10 km south of Crater Lake National Park and 55 km north-northwest of the city of Klamath Falls, the quadrangle is traversed by U.S. Highway 97 and Oregon State Highways 62 and 232. The largest town is Fort Klamath, which is located along the Wood River in the wide alluvial valley that defines the Klamath graben. Constructional volcanism appears to have alternated with extensional volcanism, terrestrial sedimentation, and faulting to create the features we see today. Along the eastern side of the Klamath graben a dramatic scarp marks the East Klamath Lake fault zone. Evidence for earlier extension includes wide-spread, flat-lying lava flows and fluvial or lacustrine sedimentary deposits. The Klamath Graben itself lies in a transition zone between the Cascade Range volcanic arc to the west and the Basin and Range extensional province to the east. Rocks in this area are generally young, most units are assigned a Quaternary age, the oldest are probably Pliocene.
Purpose:
Any application involving the need for geologic data in the Fort Klamath 7.5' quadrangle, Klamath County, Oregon. The quadrangle's database has been generated to further our understanding of bedrock and surficial processes at work in the region and to document evidence for seismotectonic activity in Oregon. This map is released as an interim product as part of an ongoing project to map the geology of the Klamath Basin, southwest Oregon. The database is not suitable for site-specific geologic evaluations.
Supplemental Information:
Digital files include various map coverages created in MapInfo Professional version 7.0 (.tab) and a screen graphic of the map in Adobe PDF format. Also, map coverages are provided in ESRI's ArcView version 3.3 Shapefile (.shp) format. A text accompanies the digital map files (see GMS96text.pdf). This text contains a detailed map unit description, a discussion of the quadrangle's geologic history, and an assessment of the quadrangle's geologic hazards and resources. The following digital geologic map entities are provided: map_polygons and map_faults. The plotfiles (PDF format) will generate a map sheet and DOGAMI Geologic Map Series Report. The author was given digital data sets and paper plots for checking against the source map(s) to verify the linework and attributes. Also, the author was asked to check the metadata and accompanying files for completeness and accuracy. This data is not field-checked and comes with no guarantees as to its accuracy.

Use Constraints:
The Fort Klamath 7.5' geologic-map database should be used to evaluate and understand the geologic character of the Fort Klamath quadrangle as a whole. The data should not be used for purposes of site-specific land-use planning or site-specific geologic evaluations. The database is sufficiently detailed to identify and characterize geologic materials and structures. However, it is not sufficiently detailed for site-specific determinations. There is uncertainity in the position of geologic contacts because of the field mapping process. The quadrangle is largely blanketed by a uniform layer of Mazama ash. Contacts are only rarely exposed, so relationships between units and the nature of the contacts themselves are generally constrained by large-scale features. It may be inappropriate to use this data set at scales smaller than originally intended. The fact that this database was compiled and edited at a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information may not have been uniformly retained in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, although higher resolution data is incorporated in most of the map, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution data. Acknowledgment of the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and partial funding from the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data.

Data Set Credit:
Geologic mapping of the Fort Klamath 7.5' quadrangle was partially funded by the U.S. Geological Survey National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program, under assistance award no. 8HQAG2037. Clark Niewendorp (DOGAMI) formatted the text, annotated and formatted the map, and wrote the metadata for the digital file to conform to DOGAMI and USGS publication standards (where applicable).

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report: Polygon and polyline entities were entered and checked by the geologist who made the observations. Still, the accuracy of the attributes is unknown.
Logical Consistency Report:
Spatial data is presented in the form of polygons, lines, and points characterizing the geology only in the quadrangles. This dataset does not have topology. However, polygons were checked for misalignment errors such as slivers, overlaps, bow ties, splits, and missing nodes. Where found errors were corrected. The geology was delineated by the geologist on a 1:24,000, 7.5-minute USGS topographic quadrangle. Check plots of the map were reviewed by the mapper and cartographer for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. This data is not field-checked and is an interpretation of the mapper. No guarantees are provided as to its accuracy.
Completeness Report:
This set of digital coverages delineate the geologicl features within the Fort Klamath 7.5' quadrangle, Klamath County, Oregon, at a scale of 1:24,000. It does not include the files used to create the information shown in collar, or margins, of the paper version and graphic versions of the complete publication.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
The data can't be more accurate than the USGS topographic quadrangle from which it was developed. Positional accuracy of geologic contacts vary based on the techiques and quality of mapping. Still the horizontal accuracy of the coverage should be regarded as unknown.

Process Description:
Field mapping and aerial photograph interpretation; iterative process.
Transfer of geologic linework and point data from field maps and aerial photographs to a scale-stable cartographic base of the quadrangles
Description of Map Units and Correlation of Map Units
Polygons, lines, and points representing geologic features and data points were hand digitized from author-prepared base-stable geologic map at 1:24,000 scale.
The resultant coverages were attributed with data describing the geologic units, contacts, structures and point locations.
Draft check plots of the geologic map and explanation were created and submitted for peer review. Revisions were made to the geospatial database as needed.
Prior to release of map-on-demand files and metadata, the author was given final digital data sets and paper plots for checking against the source map(s) to verify the linework and attributes. Also, the author was asked to check the metadata and accompanying files for completeness and accuracy.

Entity and Attribute Overview:
The digital map information contains polygon and polyline entities. Polygon data (map_polygons) is provided for each rock unit within the quadrangle. Each polygon contains the following polygon attributes: polygon_id, unit_label, group_name, formation_name, member_name, informal_name, stratigraphic_age, unit_descriptioin, polarity, fossils, chemistry, and notes. Polyline data is provided for each fault segment within the quadrangle. Each polyline (map_faults) contains the following polyline attributes: fault_id, trace_type, style, fault_name, side_down, attitude, and notes. For a description of the regional setting, resources, and hazards, in addition to information relating to the data entities and attributes, please see the text that accompanies this publication.
