Abstract:
The area covered by this map is located in south-central Oregon in the central part of Klamath County. The two principal geographic features in the area are Langell Valley, a broad, flat valley occupying the center of the map, and Bryant Mountain, a large, high-elevation area that occupies the western part of the map. Langell Valley is a fault-bounded graben, which appears to be a half-graben or trapdoor graben with larger displacements on its west side than on its east side. Bryant Mountain is a large horst, with major displacement faults (up 750 m) on its east and west sides. All of the faulting in the area is Basin and Range type high-angle normal faulting. Relationships within the mapped area suggest three periods of faulting. North-trending faults are oldest in the area. These in are cut by the most topographically prominent set of faults, trending approximately northwest-southest. Less prominent in the landscape, but possibly essential to understanding the hydrology of the area are the youngest east-west trending faults.
The geologic history revealed in the outcrops within the mapped area began with the eruption of a series of trachyandesite and basaltic trachyandesite flows. Dates from the uppermost flows in this section are in the range of 7-8 Ma. The lava flows are interbedded with fine-grained sediments and many appear to be water-affected, having interacted with water while they were flowing and cooling. This section of flows appears to have formed topographic higher areas during the following eruption of the younger basaltic flows and continued deposition of sediments. Thus, these younger flows, with dates in the range of 5-7 Ma, appear to have thinned against the basaltic andesite highs. Some of the basaltic flows also interacted with water, with both pillowed and water affected flows. The basaltic flows exposed on Bryant Mountain fall within distinct chemical, special, petrographic, and perhaps age groups. The flows on the southwest side of the mountain have Basin and Range chemical affinities and ophitic textures, while the flows in the northern part of the mountain have Snake River Plain affinities and diktytaxitic textures. The flows in the eastern side of the Langell Valley generally have transitional chemical affinities, and a mix of petrographic textures.
Purpose:
The digital geologic map database for the two quadrangles have been created as a general-purpose data set that is applicable to land-related investigations in the earth and biological sciences. The quadrangles' database have been generated to further our understanding of bedrock and surficial processes at work in the region and to document evidence for seismotectonic activity in Oregon. The database is designed to serve as a base layer suitable for ecosystem and mineral resource assessment and for building a hydrogeologic framework for the basin(s) in which it occurs. The database is not suitable for site-specific geologic evaluations.
Supplemental Information:
The CD contains digital files with various map coverages created in MapInfo Professional version 7.0 (.tab) and a screen graphic of the map in Adobe PDF format. Digital map coverages are also provided as ArcView version 3.3 Shapefile (.shp) format for ESRI users. Accompanying the screen graphic of the map, is a text file (pdf format) describing the map units, a discussion of the quadrangle's geologic history, and an assessment of the quadrangle's geologic hazards and resources. This data is not field-checked and comes with no guarantees as to its accuracy.

Logical Consistency Report:
Spatial data is presented in the form of polygons, lines, and points characterizing the geology only in the quadrangles. This dataset does not have topology. However, polygons were checked for misalignment errors such as slivers, overlaps, bow ties, splits, and missing nodes. Where found errors were corrected. The geology was delineated by the geologist on a 1:24,000, 7.5-minute USGS topographic quadrangle. Check plots of the map were reviewed by the mapper and cartographer for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. This data is not field-checked and is an interpretation of the mapper. No guarantees are provided as to its accuracy.
Completeness Report:
The mapping project as originally designed has been completed for two quadrangles. The geology of the two quadrangles are based on relationships gathered from outcrops, float, and rock exposure on foot or vehicle traverses. Portions of both quadrangle may not have been visited or field checked. Interpretation of the geology in the quadrangles may have been supplemented by examination of the land surface using aerial photographs, shaded relief image(s) derived from a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), or both. Rock unit properties are described in the text. All geospatial database elements are attributed.

The data can't be more accurate than the USGS topographic quadrangle from which it was developed. Positional accuracy of geologic contacts vary based on the techiques and quality of mapping. Still the horizontal accuracy of the coverage should be regarded as unknown.

Description of Map Units and Correlation of Map Units
Polygons, lines, and points representing geologic features and data points were hand digitized from author-prepared base-stable geologic map at 1:24,000 scale.
The resultant coverages were attributed with data describing the geologic units, contacts, structures and point locations.
Draft check plots of the geologic map and explanation were created and submitted for peer review. Revisions were made to the geospatial database as needed.
Prior to release of map-on-demand files and metadata, the author was given final digital data sets and paper plots for checking against the source map(s) to verify the linework and attributes. Also, the author was asked to check the metadata and accompanying files for completeness and accuracy.
