Description:
Abstract:
Scientific findings of the last several years have shown that the Oregon coast is vulnerable to great (M 8-9) earthquakes that can occur on the offshore Cascadia subduction zone fault system. Such earthquakes can generate tsunamis that will be very dangerous to populated areas of the Pacific Northwest coast. Tsunamis are a series of waves generated by undersea earthquakes, and this study presents results of computer models simulating local earthquakes and the tsunamis they might cause. The simulations were used in conjunction with field observations to produce the map.
Purpose:
Mapped boundaries may be viewed as guides for evacuation planning in the event of an earthquake and tsunami.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: ±4 ft
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
Numerical simulation data were entered onto topographic maps with 5-ft contours and horizontal scale of 1:4,800; horizontal positional accuracy is at best approximately ±4 ft. Accuracy of tsunami flooding (inundation) estimates is much lower than positional accuracy and is discussed by Priest and others (1997). In order to add conservatism to estimates, inundation boundaries were drawn, in general, somewhat beyond (landward of) the numerical simulation boundaries. Thus, e.g., areas below an estimated flood elevation were mapped as potentially flooded, even if the estimated flooding extent did not reach that far inland; likewise, estimated flooding elevations were drawn, in general, at the nearest 5-ft contour line above them. 2.4.2.2.1 Vertical Positional Accuracy Value: ±5 ft 2.4.2.2.2 Vertical Positional Accuracy Explanation: Numerical simulation data were entered onto topographic maps with 5-ft contours and horizontal scale of 1:4,800; vertical positional accuracy is at least ±5 ft. (see horizontal positional accuracy report for further explanation of accuracy)
