The geologic data and information presented in
this report and the accompanying map were first
produced by the Oregon Department of Geology and
Mineral Industries under contract for the Grande
Ronde Model Watershed Program. The original
report was completed after peer reviews by
geoscientists at the Oregon Water Resources
Department, the U.S. Geological Survey Water
Resources Division, Portland State University, and
Boise State University.

- Description:

- Abstract:
-
This report provides detailed 1:24,000 scale
geologic mapping of the lower Catherine Creek area
and southern Grande Ronde Valley based on new
field work and geochemical studies. The report
focuses on the geologic characteristics that
influence the movement of groundwater. The map
includes subsurface data based on water wells and
geophysical data, and includes a rough
three-dimensional model of the main geologic units
beneath the southern Grande Ronde Valley floor.
- Purpose:
-
Declining populations of salmon and steelhead in
the Columbia Basin have led to many attempts to
improve habitat in spawning streams. The Grande
Ronde River is one of the few remaining
free-flowing tributaries of the Columbia, and
Catherine Creek, a major tributary of the Grande
Ronde, provides some of the best remaining upland
spawning habitat in the system. Low summer flows
in the lower reaches of Catherine Creek may impede
spawning, and so there is considerable interest in
enhancing low flows. One possible solution is to
substitute groundwater in place of surface water
for irrigation purposes. This concept requires a
basic understanding of the geology of groundwater
resources, which this report presents.

The resolution of this digital geologic map
information is 1:24,000 (1 inch equals
approximately 2000 feet). Uses of this digital
data should not violate this spatial resolution,
even though the digital format removes the
constraint of scale as on a paper map. The
accuracy inherent in map scale is also present in
digital format. At a scale larger than 1:24,000,
higher resolution data is not available and will
not yield greater real detail.
