Description:
Abstract:
This metadata is for Open-File Report O-04-13, Geologic Map of Josephine County, 2004. The Open-File Report contains digital map data (line and polygon entities) created from heads-up digitizing over the Ramp, L., and Peterson, N.V., 1979 map: Geologic Map of Josephine County, Plate 1, scale 1:125,000. A full-color screen graphic of Ramp, L., and Peterson, N.V., 2004, Geologic Map of Josephine County, Oregon, adapted from Ramp, L., and Peterson, N.V., 1979 map: Geologic Map of Josephine County, Oregon, Plate 1, in Adobe PDF format is provided for viewing.
Purpose:
The purpose of this Open-File Report is to provide digital map information that is portrayed on the original paper map in Ramp, L., and Peterson, N.V., 1979, Geology and mineral resources of Josephine County, Oregon: Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries Bulletin 100, 45 p. The digital map information is not suitable for site-specific geologic evaluations, both in terms of content and display.
Supplemental Information:
The CD contains digital files with various map coverages created in MapInfo Professional version 7.0 (Tab). Digital map coverages are also provided in ArcView version 3.3 Shapefile (Shp) format for ESRI users. These data are not field-checked and comes with no guarantees as to its accuracy.
The CD also contains a separate screen graphic of the Geologic Map of Josephine County, Oregon, 2004, in Adobe PDF format (OFR O-04-13map.pdf). This map is derived from the Tab coverages. A text describing the map units, a discussion of the Josephine Countys' structural and geologic history, and an assessment of its mineral resources is available as a separate publication: Ramp, L., and Peterson, N.V., 1979, Geology and mineral resources of Josephine County, Oregon: Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries Bulletin 100, 45 p.

Use Constraints:
The source map was modified and the digital map data contains information that provides a display or plot derived from, but not identical to, the information content on the source map. Data collected and interpreted at a scale of 1:125,000. User should use caution when overlaying other data sets and should not make legally binding decisions from this data. Any person using the information presented here should fully understand the data collection and compilation process before beginning their analysis/use. The burden of determining fitness for use lies with the user.
These data are subject to change. Acknowledgment of the DOGAMI would be appreciated in products derived from these data.
To avoid the risk of misinterpretation, invalid results, and erroneous conclusions, the users must consider the original map scale, collection methodology, currency of data, and any other conditions specific to every data element and each dataset as a whole. Potential users are advised to consult with DOGMAI to gain an understanding of the inherent limitations of this data set and its scope of inference. Also, the user must be aware that errors and conditions originating from physical sources involved in developing a dataset may be reflected in the data, and that the digital processing performed during preparation, storage, and transmission of the dataset may have exacerbated such errors and/or introduced additional ones.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report: The accuracy of the attributes is unknown
Logical Consistency Report:
Spatial data is presented in the form of polygons and lines characterizing the geology only in the county. This dataset does not have topology. However, polygons were checked for misalignment errors such as slivers, overlaps, bow ties, splits, and missing nodes. Where found errors were corrected. The geology was delineated by the geologist on a 1:125,000 scale topographic map. Check plots of the map were reviewed by the DOGAMI geologists and Len Ramp (retired) and cartographer for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. This data is not field-checked and is an interpretation of the original mappers. No guarantees are provided as to its accuracy.
Completeness Report:
The mapping project as originally designed (1979) has been completed for the county. The geology of the county is based on relationships gathered from outcrops, float, and rock exposure on foot or vehicle traverses. Portions of the county may not have been visited or field checked. Unit properties are described in Ramp. L., and Peterson, N.V., 1979, Geology and mineral resources of Josephine County, Oregon: Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries Bulletin 100, 45 p. All geospatial database elements are attributed.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
The data cannot be more accurate than the USGS topographic quadrangle from which it was developed. Positional accuracy of geologic contacts vary based on the techniques and quality of mapping. Still the horizontal accuracy of the coverage should be regarded as unknown.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: Unknown

Process Step:
Process Description:
ORIGINAL MAP: The original paper map for this Open-File Report was a product of manual cartography and produced through offset lithography. Rock unit polygons and hazard information were delineated manually to produce 'open window' negatives. The topographic base map (at scale of 1:62,500) was manually spliced, photo-reduced, and ultimately composited with the rock unit color and pattern-fill 'open window' negatives through pin-registration of films. The lithography process involved laying down ink on a paper sheet from a lithographic printing plate - one plate for each primary color of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. These manual processes presented a number of opportunities for map misregistration. In processing the scanned images of the original paper maps, the registration problems of the original maps are minimized but not eliminated.
SCANNING: The original paper map was scanned at 300 dots per inch, raw TIFF format (packbits compression) using a large format scanner at BLM. The scan yielded a raster image with a 24 bit color depth. The scanned data was then saved to CD-ROM disk for archive.
GEOREFERENCING: A georeferencing process to establish image-to-world coordinate relationships was performed. Control points were established to enable transforming the scanned image to a map image in the specified earth coordinate system. Care was taken to select control points to achieve the lowest possible positional error in processing the image. The image was registered into a Universal Transverse Mecator projection, NAD27 (zone 10) using Blue Marble Geographic Transformer (ver 3.1) and referenced using 1st order polynomial transformation applied with 14 points of 14. Maximum pixel error in the georeferencing process was 1.
HEADS-UP DIGITIZING: Geologic data was inputed using heads-up digitizing. Heads-up digitizing works directly on the computer screen using the scanned map as a backdrop. The process involved manually tracing lines and delineating polygons (clicking the mouse to place a vertices) on a computer screen over the top of the scanned raster image. MapInfo Professional's (ver 7.0) digitizing features captured the line and polygon coverages.
