Description:
Abstract:
A geologic compilation of the Upper Klamath Basin, Oregon is presented culminating 10 years of mapping efforts. 47 quadrangles mapped by 10 geologists are presented in a compilation that supports earthquake hazard analysis and water resource planning, including groundwater modeling.
Purpose:
Geologic mapping in support of earthquake hazard analysis in the Klamath Falls urban growth boundary. Geologic mapping to assist understanding and planning for water resource issues in the Klamath Basin.
Supplemental Information:
This data are available on CD-ROM. Five spatial data files and a brief text are available. Spatial data include: Geology polygons, Fault linework, Geochemical sample points, Radiometric age sample points, and Volcano eruptive points. Spatial data files is available in ESRI (.shp) format and MapInfo (.tab) format.

Use Constraints:
This data is compiled from 1:24,000 scale geologic quadrangle mapping. It is not suitable or appropriate for use at scales larger than 1:24,000. Users should note the geologic unit attributes are generalized to 1:100,000 resolution and the hydrogeologic unit attributes are generalized to 1:250,000.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
An attribute accuracy report has not been completed. All attribute fields were queried for typographical errors and erroneous unique entries - where either of these were found, corrections have been made.
Logical Consistency Report: Geometry of the polygon data has been checked for gaps, slivers, noding problems, etc. Where geometry errors were found, these have been corrected.
Completeness Report: The data set is complete for a major portion of the Upper Klamath Basin in south-central Oregon.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
This geologic compilation was prepared using 1:24,000 scale topograpahic quadrangles, which meet National Map Accuracy Standards. The compiler estimates that polygon boundaries, lines, and points in the spatial data files have a positional accuracy of ± 100 feet.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: A vertical positional accuracy report has not been completed. All spatial features are from original source map data with features plotted on U.S. Geological Survey 7½' topographic maps.

Process Description:
Field methods:
The various geologic map contributing authors used different methods for their field work. These methods include walking out contacts between rock units of different types, sampling and making observations at specific locations, location of samples with GPS and field computers as well as on paper topographic maps, and written logs of observations and sample locations. The field observations are enhanced by the observation of aerial photographs, analysis of sample rocks for their geochemical compositions and their radiometric ages and the study of thin sections of the rock samples. The original geologic maps, before compilation, were all completed on 1:24,000 scale USGS standard topographic base maps.

Process Step:
Process Description:
Compilation methods:
Because of the number of contributing authors, the only equivalent data available throughout the study area were the geochemical analyses. To compare the analyses, they first were all normalized and then were plotted on the International Union of Geological Scientists (IUGS, 1991) volcanic rock classification diagram (SiO2/Total alkali). Several different elemental comparisons were tried, including Ba/SiO2, Sr/SiO2, Ba/K, and Sr/K. None of these yielded consistent lithology group results throughout the database. Finally, the analyses were sorted by K20 within each of the IUGS volcanic rock classifications. Then, the amounts of SiO2, TiO2, and Al2O3 were compared and classified according to their relative percentages (high, medium, low). This methodology created generalized classes of volcanic rocks, which were assigned alphanumeric labels (for example, Tand6 and Tbas10). These classes were then plotted spatially and compared to the original author’s map units. A unit label was assigned for each area of similar unit and class types, composed of the age of the unit from the radiometric ages and stratigraphic relations in the vicinity and the informal geologic unit name. The lithologic/hydrogeologic units were assigned based only on age and the IUGS rock classification type.
